HealthBridge Children’s Hospital is designed, staffed, and equipped to care for medically complex patients, yet dedicated to assisting children and their families through challenging times within a warm and nurturing environment. Our Acute Medical Specialty service provides specialized medical care to children and young adults with high acuity levels requiring extended recovery times after traditional acute care hospital stays.   Many transfer directly from the pediatric or neonatal intensive care unit still medically and physically compromised with multisystem complications that require intense monitoring and observation daily. Length of stay is determined by each individual child’s needs based on their diagnosis and treatment program. The goal is to transfer to lower levels of care and restore prior levels of function to return home.

Common Conditions Treated but not limited to:

 Brain Injury

Spinal Cord injury

 Premature birth complications

Birth anomalies

 Respiratory failure

Neuromuscular disorders

 Complex surgical recovery

Central nervous system infections

Approach to Treatment

To provide the highest quality medical services and ensure a smooth transition for better outcomes, all patients are evaluated prior to coming to HealthBridge. Due to their multiple medical issues, patients considered for our Acute Medical level of care receive daily physician observation and care, as well as the intense services of an interdisciplinary team. This team consists of specialty physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, respiratory therapists, a registered dietician, case manager, social worker and activities coordinator who develop an individualized care plan for each child.  At HealthBridge Children’s Hospital our comprehensive treatment plans are designed to treat the whole child, not just the illness or injury.  Goals are set and updated weekly at our Interdisciplinary Team Conferences. Because we believe family members are an important part of the team, we encourage them to attend these meetings for the latest information on their child’s progress. Family training is provided for medical and therapeutic care that may be needed once the child goes home.
